Intelligent Transportation Systems-New York (ITS-NY) awarded TransCore and the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) its Outstanding ITS Project of the Year award for its transit pilot project that green lights city buses and emergency responders, while keeping city buses moving.
Known as Transit Signal Priority (TSP), recent advances in technology have made it possible and practical for the city to deploy TSP city-wide at a far lower cost than just a few years ago. New York City saves millions by leveraging in-vehicle technology and its advanced traffic control system that manages over 12,800 intersections.
The in-vehicle systems monitor the bus location and issue the TSP request at the appropriate trigger point; this message is transmitted to the transit center, which tracks the vehicle progress and then to the traffic management center where it is evaluated and transmitted to the intersection using a modified NTCIP object – all within 1 second. The intersection then modifies its signal timing to “help” the bus through the network.
The initial results have been impressive. Use of this system has reduced NYC Select Bus Service travel times from Staten Island to the Bronx up to 18.4%. Average speeds also improved up to 22.6%, and bus ridership increased by almost 10%.
